Early sailors and voyagers on long journeys were commonly plagued by a disease known as scurvy. The symptoms of this disease included sore, bleeding gums and loose teeth. Pain in the muscles and joints and subcutaneous hemorrhages were also characteristic of scurvy. Death due to internal bleeding was the final result of this disease.
