Pink Slime BeefThis story has been in the news a lot the last few days. Check out this news story.

The pink slime is a filler which takes waste trimmings and reprocesses them in a way that the trimmings can be added back into the final product.

I thought this video was very interesting and explained the process very well. I think it is important to understand the process and get a better picture of it.

Here are some things I keep thinking about.

  • This figure really stood out for me from today’s, March 27, 2012 Omaha World-Herald article, “Pink Slime Backlash Costs Jobs at Beef Plants”

Currently, makers of lean, finely textured beef can produce about 850 million pounds of the substance annually. If the additive is permanently replaced by other cuts of beef, that would require 1.5 million additional head of cattle to be slaughtered each year.

  • I talked about this story with a co-worker and he remembers adding oatmeal to hamburger to help stretch it out and make it last longer. People will need to come up with their own fillers, if meat prices go up substantially because of the removal of this filler.

Some things to think about. I know there are a lot of opinions out there. These two really came to the forefront for me.
